Mrs. Collins, Fabric Collage, and My Story of Religion
I chose to express my story of religion with a fabric collage. I chose this medium for two reasons. First, I learned the basic story of Christianity from Mrs. Collins, who came to my elementary school once a week. Mrs. Collins used to have a felt board that she would stick Velcro paper figurines on to tell her Bible stories. We would also sing religious songs and learn how to be “good” people. I wanted to sort of recreate that aspect of my history. The second reason I chose this medium was that I enjoy sewing, and I wanted to incorporate my fabric scraps into an art piece.
My fabric collage may look sort of childish, but this is because my story of religion mainly comes from my childhood memories. The landscape of the collage is my grandma’s church. The crucified Jesus hangs at the center of her church, and I wanted to make sure he was included in my piece. I can always remember looking at the graphic portrait of bloody Jesus during Mass. I also included my older sister and I in the bottom of the collage because my sister was influential in my childhood.
My story of religion is not solely based in my childhood. As I have gotten older I have learned more about other religions and non-religious beliefs as well, and I often find myself disagreeing with many religious beliefs. I have also expanded my knowledge of other beliefs by taking this course, and hearing others’ stories.
